Keith and Elle lost their best friend Robbie to suicide a month ago. Elle is working hard to make sure no one she loves will make that choice, but Keith is on a different path.
Some people can appreciate a morbid sense of humor, but making jokes about death and dying can actually be a sign of depression or hint at suicide. Watch out for other warning signs and symptoms to see if your peer's jokes are harmless or a sign of something bigger.
Comments like "people would love me more if I died" are huge red flags. If someone you know says this, even if they sound like they're joking, reach out to them and/or their parents or any trusted adult as soon as possible. Remind them that they are loved very much.
The death of a friend or loved one can trigger depression. Not coping well with the death or even suicide of a friend can lead to suicidal thoughts. If someone you know is experiencing this, encourage them to reach out to a counselor or trusted adult.
